What's so special about Douglas Fir?
Douglas Fir trees (the tallest of the pines) are native to North America. They’re not really a fir tree, but a unique species discovered on Vancouver Island by a Scottish man. It’s a durable wood, heavier than pine or poplar, with a gorgeous visible grain that’s slightly rosy in colour. Over time this will darken with exposure to light.

A pine bench is relatively lightweight. Our new Douglas Fir bench will feel more substantial and may be more suitable for individuals who meet the definition of a “person of size” or “large”. The extra height in a tall bench may help in this circumstance, as it may help provide more of a gap at the back of the knees.
All benches are standard width of 17.5″. Anyone who has trouble sitting cross-legged, but can still kneel on the floor should be able to use our benches comfortably.
